BALTIMORE, M.D. – A drawn white curtain separated OneRepublic from the crowd for their first song at Baltimore’s Pier Six Pavilion. The pop rock hit-makers had already built anticipation to a fever pitch as fans watched the talented Mayer Hawthorne perform his opening set, and this curtain tactic only made the screams grow louder.

Perhaps that was the goal.

On a relatively cool August night at the harbor, there was just enough breeze to prevent the crowd inside the tent from scorching as the curtain finally dropped and the adrenaline levels surged.

Then there was no more delayed satisfaction as eager frontman Ryan Tedder led the band through two of their most sensational hits: “All the Right Moves” and “Secrets”. For a while it seemed they might be burning through their prime material too quickly.

But that assumption would mean forgetting just how many OneRepublic songs have been devoured by the public consciousness over the last half-decade.

And even the new material from the band’s latest effort, Native, sounds destined for chart domination.

“I Can’t Stop” has all the hooks it needs to follow in the footsteps of the band’s other accessible melodies.

Standing out from many of their pop rivals, each member is a talented musician, and together they feel like a band as opposed to a group of players who gathered together out of necessity or record label pressure.

There was even a spanish guitar solo to give the band even more musical cred.

A massive lighting rig gave the mid-size venue the atmosphere of an arena, and allowed the band to showcase some of their quirks, including what appeared to be a genuine appreciation for the movie E.T.

The combined talent and magnetism of OneRepublic, and Hawthorne, was more than enough to leave the crowd’s youth in a state of bliss. And the parents who got dragged along might have found something to appreciate.
