BRISTOW, V.A. – Scalpers be damned, Kid Rock is on a mission to sell cheap concert tickets. His summer tour, billed the ‘Best Night Ever’, got underway in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. at Jiffy Lube Live on Friday night, with the majority of fans paying just $20 to get in.

With no shortage of pyrotechnics, stage jumps, new songs, and old, it was a bargain. Not to mention a revved up Kool & the Gang provided a tight set of their ’70s and ’80s classics to get things started.

Fellow Michigan native Uncle Kracker was scheduled to start things off, but a flight delay nixed his set and put the Gang on stage first.

Like the 2012 Van Halen tour, the unusual choice of the R&B titans for the rock crowd seemed far less unusual once the band began their parade through a library of hits so vast they didn’t have time to finish the list.

“Emergency”, “Fresh”, and “Get Down On It” had more than enough power to get the crowd moving, whether they were dodging rain showers on the lawn or bearing high humidity under the roof.

But to speak of the truly unusual, that distinction goes to the choice of “Don’t Stop Believin’” as the lead-in song for Kid Rock. Sure, the song is just about everywhere, but it’s not the kick in the gut you expect to hear before Kid Rock lands on stage.

Dropping from the rafters during the Journey tune was a currency-printed curtain with Kid Rock’s face projected on it.

Perhaps fans were to see it a subtle reminder of all the money they were saving.

But there were no corresponding cutbacks in his setlist, which included all the expected choices along with a lively cover of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock ‘N’ Roll”.

After a burst of pyro and a few leaps into the air, Kid stayed at his genre-hopping best all evening, rarely pausing and never failing to earn his reputation as a master of ceremonies for the ultimate country rock party.
